European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
