Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that patients who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People using these treatments need to be cognizant of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the injections explains the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced something that goes on and you become extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

This challenge is worsened if users have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Growing Interest

Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle management.
