This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

We present a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy horror films: Sit down with your significant other and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its online premiere via Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like standard physical horror, but inside Together exists a profound examination about our choices in loving our partners.

A Debut Feature Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the actors infuse a particular energy to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The story begins when Tim and Millie relocate from the urban environment to the countryside for her career. A commonly used plot device, of course, but that’s primarily where the tropes cease. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their country house, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim tumble into an underground cave. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity starts to affect the couple. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The entire film is a slow burn horror experience, weaving in elements of dreamlike terrors, gross (but tastefully done) body horror, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes during something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts expertly and delivers them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his floundering music career inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and far away from his support system. He dreads the notion of completely losing his sense of self in another person. This fear is amplified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie never makes one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie face the type of challenges that come with long-term unions over a long period. Deep down, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these fears of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the symbolism never feels hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for staying single. Meanwhile, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could function as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion inspire anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your partner and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can undertake right now.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform at present.
